Warsaw, the national, cultural and entertainment capital of Poland is also its largest city, and is served by the Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport. Aside from huge, awe-inspiring collections of Polish and foreign art, there are more than thirty major theatres in this city. Warsaw’s National Theatre (founded in 1765) and Grand Theatre in Warsaw (established in 1778) are two of the most popular houses of drama to be found in the city. The city also attracts young and bohemian directors and performers, mostly at the smaller theatrical venues located outside downtown. At the TR Warszawa, for instance, you can discover the finest in contemporary theatre, while more sensational theatrical and musical acts may be enjoyed at the National Opera, the Chamber Opera, the National Philharmonic Hall, Roma and Buffo, and the Jewish Theatre. The puppet theatres of Warsaw such as Baj, Guiliwer and Lalka are excellent means of introducing your kids to the cultural boom in Europe today; preparing them for what is to come.
The Old Town of Warsaw has been incorporated in the UNESCO World Heritage List after the success of the rebuilding efforts that followed World War II, when almost the entire city had become a wasteland. The Royal Castle, King Zigmunt’s Column and the famous barbican are the most interesting sites in the Old Town, which together with the New Town, allow the fascinating Royal Route to run through. The Praga district is indeed the home of Warsaw fashion, and must be checked out for its shopping malls. The district is one of dramatic contrasts; modern apartment buildings stand next to the remains of demolished houses, giving you the chance to reflect deeply on world history.
The capital of Poland further boasts a variety of leafy parks, where the sight of a rowing boat cruising past an outdoor café is not that of rarity, and where free outdoor classical concerts attract large crowds to the lush greenery. The night scene is equally stimulating, and it’s an unforgettable experience to join the people of Warsaw as they hop between the cities countless bars and clubs in throngs. In fact, the mere sight of these beautiful people is enough to explain why we deemed Warsaw a top contender in this list. |
